In China there is a record-breaking plug-in hybrid that does 1,367 miles

The Roewe brand owned by Saic Motor was awarded the Guinness World Record for the distance travelled without refuelling

How many miles can a plug-in hybrid car travel without ever stopping to refuel? The answer is 2,200 km (1,367 miles), according to the latest Guinness World Record set by the Chinese brand Roewe owned by SAIC Motor.

In fact, the new D7 DMH saloon with a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery managed to cover a distance of 2,208 km (1,372 miles) (almost the same as from Lecce to London) with an average fuel consumption of 2.49 litres/100 km (113.4 mpg-UK): a rather low value.

An official record

The announcement of the official record was made by SAIC Motor itself on 28 October. According to the company's statement, the D7 DMH saloon was driven for four days between the Chinese cities of Lanzhou and Urumqi, going from outside temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius down to -8 degrees, on roads where local manufacturers usually test their new cars.

What the D7 DMH looks like

Under the bonnet of Roewe's new four-door is a 1.5-litre 112 PS naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 150 kW electric motor, or around 204 PS and 330 Nm of torque, which is managed through a two-speed coaxial transmission mated in turn to the car's traditional CVT gearbox.

According to local-cycle homologation data, this saloon is capable of a combined range of 1,400 km (870 miles), with an electric range of about 125 km (78 miles). However, it is not yet clear whether it will ever arrive in Europe and at what price, which by the way in China is about 100,000 yuan, or just under £11,000.
