SRT has introduced the eBoost Air e-compressor as a solution to the limitations of traditional turbochargers, which require high engine RPMs to generate significant pressure. This innovation was unveiled alongside Stellantis’ twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine in the fifth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. Although the system is still a prototype and not yet ready for production, SRT developed it in just seven weeks. The eBoost Air system includes a 48-volt e-compressor, a bypass valve, and an energy-storage device, which work together to direct air into a secondary intake path, rapidly building boost and reducing turbo lag.

The eBoost Air system can generate 10 PSI within 650 milliseconds and reach 90 percent of its maximum torque almost instantly. However, its runtime is limited by the energy storage device, allowing it to operate for about three seconds in the Grand Cherokee prototype. Joel Baker, SRT’s vice president of propulsion, highlighted the noticeable difference in acceleration and torque, stating that the system provides real, tangible performance improvements. The prototype engine in the Grand Cherokee boasts approximately 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, a significant increase over the standard Hurricane HO engine.

SRT is now focused on refining the eBoost Air system, including decisions about the energy storage device and potential customer applications. The company is exploring the possibilities of this technology, which could open up new opportunities due to its low-end torque capabilities. While SRT has not confirmed whether the eBoost Air will be a production feature or available for the aftermarket, it is possible that it could be adapted for the Hurricane 4 engine. The next steps involve further development and testing to determine the best path forward for this innovative technology.
