MG announces new model debuting semi-solid battery

The new batteries, similar to those of the IM L6 Light Year, should come standard on the Cyber GTS

According to CarNewsChina.com, on 14 December general manager Zhou Yu, head of the MG division of the giant SAIC, said in a post on Weibo that the company's new model coming in 2025 will have a semi-solid battery as standard and will not be expensive.

This innovation will be part of four launches, two involving completely new models and two involving updated cars, and in between there will also be the plug-in variant of the DMH hybrid system. But which car will bring the new batteries to the road?

Will it arrive in the coupé?

Again according to the magazine, the most likely candidate to receive the semi-solid battery would be the Cyber GTS, a coupe variant of the Cyberster presented as a concept car, although this partially contradicts Zhou's assertion as it is a sports car and therefore high-end and not exactly popular in price.

Previously, another brand in the SAIC universe had promised a car with a semi-solid battery: the IM L6 Light Year, which was expected in September and slipped a few months due to homologation. It seems likely that the semi-solid battery coming to the MG is closely related to the one used in the IM L6.

It is a 123.7 kWh pack with an energy density of more than 300 Wh/kg that would offer a range of more than 1,000 km (621 miles) calculated in the CLT cycle, but also supports ultra-fast recharging at almost 900V and has a recharging power of 400 kW, which means it can supply more than 250 miles of range in just 12 minutes.

Half a revolution

In fact, in recent months MG had announced the first all-solid-state batteries for 2025, which makes the forthcoming model look like a partial course correction, although the date might only be postponed by a few months or, at most, a year or two, as the technology seems to be ready.
