Xiaomi YU7: The SUV version of the SU7 is really stylish

The five-meter ship, which has an output of up to 691 PS, will not launch until summer

Xiaomi, the Chinese mobile phone manufacturer with electric car ambitions, has unveiled its second model: The SU7 saloon has now been followed by an SUV called the YU7. The look is quite chic and the technology has nothing to hide. In short, the newcomer is a worthy sister model to the SU7.

The first images of the production version came from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), where data and images of new Chinese models must appear before they can be sold. Shortly afterwards, however, Xiaomi itself also posted pictures of the YU7, as CarNewsChina reported.

The look is similar to that of the saloon, so the light signature with the horizontal stitch in the centre of the headlights is the same. We are also familiar with the sensor on the roof, the front apron and the contoured bonnet. However, instead of door handles with recessed grips, the YU7 has completely flat integrated handles.

Compared to the SU7, the wheelbase is identical, the length is almost the same, but the height is almost 15 cm greater. The exact dimensions: 4,999 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, 1,600 mm high and exactly 3,000 mm wheelbase. This makes the YU7 a large SUV of the calibre of a BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq, Kia EV9 or Volvo EX90. However, its competitors will also include the 25 cm shorter Tesla Model Y

The top version of the Xiaomi SU7 has a 691 PS all-wheel drive powertrain. The system output is achieved by a 299 PS motor at the front with a 392 PS rear motor. This makes a top speed of 157 mph possible. The power comes from an NMC battery from CATL; the capacity, range and operating voltage have not yet been announced.

The SU7 is available with 74.94 and 101 kWh batteries, with the all-wheel drive version having the largest energy storage system, and this battery also comes from CATL. This enables the SU7 to travel 500 miles according to the Chinese standard. In addition, this battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 19 minutes. In view of this short charging time, it can be assumed that this is an 800-volt system

Normally, it only takes one to two months from the publication of a new car on the MIIT website until the car is launched on the market. However, the YU7 is not due to be launched until June or July 2025. This is apparently due firstly to the fact that the car can now be tested without camouflage (which makes some things easier). Secondly, the plant where the newcomer is to be built is not yet ready and there is no other production capacity.

CarNewsChina expects a price of between 250,000 and 350,000 yuan, which would be £27,000 to £38,000. However, electric cars are generally much cheaper in China than here. Whether the car will come to us is not clear anyway - this question also remains unanswered for the SU7. The SU7 has been on the Chinese market since spring 2024 and costs 215,900 yuan (around £23,500) for the base model. The car is a big seller: over 100,000 units had already been delivered by mid-November, and Xiaomi hopes that this figure could rise to 130,000 by the end of the year.

What do you think?

The bottom line

Stylish looks, 800-volt technology and powerful drives: Xiaomi's two electric cars show what it's all about. Even the range is high, which is not always the case with Chinese models: the 515 miles that the SU7 with rear-wheel drive achieves according to the Chinese standard should correspond to around 400 to 435 miles according to WLTP: perhaps not top, but still very good.
