BYD celebrates 30 years of history and 10 million cars produced
The world's largest manufacturer of electrified vehicles highlights a historic milestone and a path of innovation since 1995.
BYD celebrates a major milestone - 10 million vehicles produced throughout its history. The event, which coincides with the Chinese giant's 30th anniversary, was attended by Wang Chuanfu, BYD's founder and CEO, who highlighted the main achievements over the company's three decades of history.
The vehicle marking the 10 millionth was the Denza Z9, a model recently launched on the Chinese market. The buyer was Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science, famous for the hit game "Black Myth: Wukong". The partnership between BYD and Game Science, signed earlier this year, positioned the carmaker as the exclusive automotive brand for the game.
Founded in February 1995 in Shenzhen, BYD started out with just 20 employees and an initial capital of £275,000. Initially focused on the production of rechargeable batteries, the company quickly made a name for itself and, by 1998, was already the world's second-largest producer of rechargeable batteries, supplying components to major brands such as Motorola and Nokia.
BYD entered the automotive sector in 2003 with the acquisition of Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile. In 2005, the company launched the BYD F3, its first in-house developed model, which was an immediate success, being the first Chinese vehicle to sell more than 10,000 units per month.
In 2008, BYD launched its first electric car, the F3e, marking its entry into the electrified vehicle market. Innovation continued with the launch of the revolutionary Blade Battery in 2020, which brought significant advances in safety, autonomy, and recharging speed, as well as the DM hybrid platform, consolidating the company's leadership position.
In the last three years, BYD has reached important NEV production milestones: the 3rd million in November 2022, the 5th million in August 2023, and the 9th million in September 2024. Now, with 10 million electrified vehicles produced, the company is reinforcing its status as a pioneer and global leader in the electrified segment, emphasising that the brand only produces plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or battery electric (BEV) models.
The celebration also included a historical display of the brand's models, from the F3 to the latest launches, such as the Yangwang U9, an electric supercar that demonstrates BYD's technological advancement today.
According to the latest announcements, BYD has invested massively in research and development, bringing cutting-edge technologies such as the Blade Battery, the DM hybrid system, the e-Platform 3.0 Evo, and the Yunnian suspension (DiSus System). The company has a distinctive vertical integration, producing more than 70 per cent of its vehicle components in-house, which reduces costs and increases production efficiency. In addition, BYD operates its own transport fleet for vehicle exports, further strengthening its global competitiveness.
In addition to the automotive sector, BYD is active in electronics, commercial vehicles, renewable energy and, rail transport. The company has a strong presence in the Chinese market and continues its rapid expansion into international markets, consolidating its position as a leader in the electrified vehicle industry and already among the world's major manufacturers.
