Hyundai is exploring the potential of shift-by-wire systems with a new patent that combines features of both manual and automatic transmissions. This innovative mechanism allows drivers to experience the feel of a gated manual gearbox while also offering the convenience of a traditional automatic. The system is designed to complement Hyundai’s simulated gearshifts, which have gained popularity with the electric Ioniq 5 N.

The patent describes a shifter with multiple gates that operates without a mechanical connection to the transmission. In automatic mode, it includes standard settings like Drive, Reverse, and Neutral. However, the standout feature is the inclusion of a clutch that activates manual mode when pressed, providing an additional “neutral” position when the shifter is between gears. This design aims to deliver the best of both worlds, catering to drivers who appreciate the control of a manual transmission and the ease of an automatic.

Hyundai is not alone in this endeavor, as other automakers have also been exploring similar technologies. Koenigsegg’s Lightspeed Transmission and Engage Shift System offer a combination of a nine-speed automatic and a six-speed manual within the same gearbox. Similarly, Porsche has filed a patent for a transmission gear selector that can function as either a manual or an automatic, indicating a broader industry trend towards versatile transmission systems.
