An Audi dealership worker says they had to get creative to convince a customer to sign on the dotted line.

User @dponce96, who says she lives in California, shared the unusual request they say helped them close a deal with a customer.

“What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to throw in to close a deal?” they asked in the text overlay of the clip.

Then, @dponce96 revealed their own answer: “I had to throw in the fresh eggs my coworker gave me this morning to close my car deal.”

In the caption, they asked whether others in the industry had similar experiences. “Am I crazy for this? Or is this common?” they wrote.

As of this writing, the video has garnered more than 1.2 million views.

What Can You Negotiate At A Dealership?

A carton of eggs is certainly a unique thing to bargain for when probably making a car purchase; however, negotiations do not always stop at the sticker price.

According to Consumer Reports, buyers should focus on the overall cost of a vehicle rather than just the monthly payment. Then, once a price has been locked in, negotiations can begin on items such as the trade-in value and financing terms before the purchase is complete.

Dealership add-ons and extras can also become part of the conversation. The Federal Trade Commission advises customers to review any optional add-ons carefully, since they can increase the car’s total cost and may be negotiable.

Those add-ons are usually service contracts, maintenance plans, protection products, or accessories, but according to some car salesmen on Reddit, some dealerships will also throw in weather mats, keychains, hats, and mugs.

@dponce96’s story, however, suggests that almost anything can happen during a sale. Sometimes a customer’s final request comes down to them feeling like they got a little something extra before signing.

That does not mean every dealership will agree, of course. Experiences vary, and how much a salesperson budges depends on the vehicle, the dealership, and the deal details.

For customers, it never hurts to ask what more you can get before signing paperwork. Just remember that anything promised as part of the purchase should be put in writing, ideally, so both sides know exactly what they agreed to.

‘Yall Are Getting Free Stuff?? I Just Got Played’

Commenters who watched @dponce96’s video shared their own unusual experiences buying and selling cars, with some saying a few unexpected requests helped get deals across the finish line.

“I door dashed a huge bucket of KFC and side, etc., for a big family for a late-night deal,” one person wrote.

Others shared what they managed to negotiate before buying a car.

“I got 12 free oil changes. And [a] $200 gas card. Also, they let me keep the car for a whole day without paying before I said yes,” one person said. “I don’t drive much, and so my oil doesn’t need replacement that often, and so I’ve only had to get my oil changed once a year. So that’s 12 years free oil change[s].”

Another buyer said they accidentally ended up with a better financing offer.

“Pulled a boss move unknowingly,” they wrote. “Told the dealer I was gonna refinance the car eventually bc my bank was offering a 1.9% interest rate on auto loans. The dealer matched it.”

Other commenters said they had no idea customers could ask for additional perks when buying a vehicle.

“I’m so ignorant. I had no idea you can ask for free oil changes and huge magnetic bows. I thought you could try to get the price lowered,” one viewer wrote.

But not everyone had success asking for something extra.

“I asked for a Mazda-branded coffee tumbler, and the salesman told me since they gave me $2000 off MSRP, they couldn’t afford to give me anything else,” another shared.

One person who said they work in the industry said negotiations are normal but have limits.

What do you think?

“As someone who works in car sales, I’ll negotiate with you, but the minute you think you pay my bills solely off this sale, we’re done,” they wrote.
