A woman who stopped inside a gas station restroom was shocked to see it was rigged up with disco balls and lights. TikTok user Abby (@abby40893) published a viral video on her “gold mine” find, which accrued over 138,000 views on the social media platform.

“I’m in a bathroom in a gas station, and I got to show you something,” she says into the camera, smiling. Next, she flips her camera lens around to show off a disco ball light attached to the ceiling right outside of a stall. However, there’s another set of fixtures Abby says initially caught her attention.

“First, I see, like, these [lights]. I was like, 'What are those? Are those cameras?' And then I see the disco balls,” she tells her viewers, panning over the ceiling to reveal that there’s yet another one of these party-time lights hovering above her head.

But that’s not all: Abby then directs her lens to a wall, which reveals a placard of a smiling and winking frog. Above it is a large, red button, akin to something one would see in an episode of the 1960s Adam West "Batman" TV show, along with an ominous message warning restroom guests: “DO NOT push this red button.”

She then walks her viewers through what happens once the button is engaged. “Are you ready?” she asks before her video cuts to complete darkness. It's not long before it’s evident that the disco balls have been activated, and there are red lights swirling throughout the restroom. Following this, they begin to turn green, then blue, and white, all to the tune of “Celebration” by Kool & The Gang. This prompts the TikTok user to dance while looking into the camera as her video comes to a close.

Commenters who saw the video were enamored with her discovery. Some used it as an opportunity to crack jokes: “Where is Abby? She went to the bathroom an hour ago,” one said. Another quipped, “We gonna have a potty tonight.” Whereas someone else speculated that this could be quite confusing for folks using the facilities when party mode is enabled. “Imagine trying to wipe and someone presses the button,” they wrote.

Disco Ball Bathroom Location

And there was at least one person who asked Abby where they could locate the party potty. In a comment, she detailed that it was at the Hop Shops gas station in Florence, Kentucky. This is an area known for placing whimsy in incongruous places. Folks who’ve traveled throughout the area will probably be familiar with its distinctive water tower that reads “Florence Y’all!”

As it turns out, there are several Hop Shops locations that sport Disco Bathrooms, according to the business's website. The frog is the chain’s mascot, and six out of its 15 stations are outfitted with this dance-centric feature. Depending on the store you visit, each bathroom plays a different song. So, if you’re ever on a road trip in Kentucky or Ohio and want to check them out, here they are:

  • Verona, Kentucky: This Hop Shops Disco Bathroom plays “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.
  • Florence, Kentucky, on 8063 US 42: “Diamonds” by Rihanna.
  • Florence, Kentucky, on 430 Mt. Zion Road: “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen.
  • Walton, Kentucky: “Time of My Life” by Bill Medley
  • Carrollton, Kentucky: “Dancing Queen” by Abba.
  • Mainevilla, Ohio: “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus.

It seems that there could be a discrepancy as to the music listed on Hop Shops’ website versus what’s currently playing, however. That’s because the track in Abby’s video is different than the ones the franchise says it plays in its Florence locations online.

Why Disco Balls And Lights In Bathrooms?

Hop Shops says that the brand’s VP of retail operations, Damon Bail, came up with the idea in 2022. After spotting a YouTube video of a restroom in another country that had a push-button-activated disco ball, he thought about installing it in the company's gas stations. The Verona, Kentucky, Hop Shops was the first one to have a disco ball installed.

The fixtures were meant to help turn the gas stations into a “destination” for travelers and not just a place where folks can fuel up and get snacks and drinks. Additionally, they highlight another marketing point Hop Shops takes pride in: the cleanliness of its bathrooms. On February 4, 2024, the chain was recognized for having some of the best restrooms in the business. Maverik took the top prize, but Hop Shops maintains its dedication to providing this quality for its customers.

Other beloved gas station chains, like Buc-ee’s, are also known for having immaculate and capacious restrooms for travelers. Islands published a list of gas stations that are known for being tidy, which includes the 2024 Cintas best restroom winner, Maverik, which regularly receives bathroom accolades. QuickTrip, Wawa, Love’s, Irving, Sheetz, Casey’s, Stewart’s, Rotten Robbie, and Turkey Hill were also applauded for their restrooms.
