We Spotted the New BMW X7 Testing in Germany
On the way to the Munich Motor Show, our Italian colleagues came across what appears to be the latest BMW X7.
The IAA Mobility Show in Munich is over, but the surprises didn't stop at the convention doors. En route to the Bavarian capital, the director of Motor1 Italy, Lorenzo Curatti, photographed a still heavily camouflaged BMW prototype driving on public roads.
The signature boxy gives us a good idea of the next-generation X7 SUV, which will likely be a heavy restyling similar to the latest 1 Series. This update could bring it closer in style and technology to the restyled 7 Series that is expected to debut in a few months.
Driving by the prototype, the first detail that emerged under the camouflage was the model's mostly unchanged surfaces: A flat hood, a high roof, and a very upright rear, along with a massive flank, sculpted wheel arches, and large wheels.
Behind that, then, we caught a glimpse of a large, possibly split, tailgate with still decidedly tentative headlamp clusters. That's coupled with as many as four, certainly not final-looking, exhaust tailpipes.

But that's not all. Also emerging from the nose appeared to be split headlights, the latest signature of the newest models at the top of the company's range. It was combined with a grille that's destined to maintain its large dimensions. The details hint at a sports version under advanced development, possibly an M Performance trim.
Of course, BMW has not yet released details on the SUV's engines and equipment. We expect the X7 to receive a technical evolution that includes electrification, with mild-hybrid and plug-in variants supporting the classic six-cylinder gasoline units. It'll likely still have a diesel and maybe even a V-8.
BMW could unveil the X7 between 2026 and 2027, with the official debut likely to take place at a US or Asian auto show, two markets where BMW sells the most of its SUVs today. All we have to do now is wait.
