TV host and racing driver Guy Martin has claimed his 1967 Volvo is the fastest car in the UK
TV host and racing driver Guy Martin has claimed his 1967 Volvo is the fastest car in the UK.
Express.co.uk reports the 32-year-old Martin bought the grey Volvo Amazon from Sweden, after seeing a photograph of it. He only has two cars – the Volvo, which he uses for special events, and a Ford Transit, which he uses as an everyday ride.
The tuned Swedish station wagon has a modified 2.8-liter turbocharged engine under the hood, but there are no details about the current power figures. According to Martin, it sprints from 0 to 60 mph (0-97 km/h) in less than three seconds and has reached a top speed of 205 mph (322 km/h).
“Although it looks like a standard Volvo, I reckon it is about the fastest car in Britain – quicker than any Ferrari, Porsche or even Bugatti. It is perfect – the best-built, most beautifully finished car in the world. As soon as I got it back to the UK, I took it for a spin down to Grimsby, near where I live. My God, it is frightening. You have to keep it pointing in a straight line”, he comments.
The Volvo is fitted with red leather racing seats and a modified dashboard, taken from Amazon’s sportier variant, the Volvo P1800. Martin says “it is not just the engine that has been modified - the entire car has been pimped and engineered. It’s mega.”
