In 2023, General Motors announced its decision to remove Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support from all its vehicles, starting with its electric models. The CEO initially supported this move, but recent developments suggest a change in strategy. GM is set to introduce a new user interface (UI) for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra, which will include compatibility with both CarPlay and Android Auto. This new UI integrates these systems into GM’s native platform, allowing users to access them alongside GM’s proprietary system without switching between multiple screens.

The new UI is designed to enhance the driving experience by casting the phone into a large window on the infotainment screen, making it easier for drivers to access both GM’s system and CarPlay/Auto. Once implemented in GM’s trucks, the automaker plans to expand this feature across its entire vehicle portfolio, potentially including future electric vehicles. This move marks a significant shift from GM’s previous plan to exclude these popular features. The UI is described as a scalable foundation that can be applied to electric, gas, and diesel-powered vehicles, aiming to transform driving into a personalized and effortless experience.

GM’s reimagined UI emphasizes intuitiveness and ease of use, featuring high-contrast display hardware for quick access to vehicle information. It includes a mode-aware gauge cluster that adapts to the current drive mode, displaying relevant details such as those for the upgraded Super Cruise system. The UI also offers new 3D visualizations for Super Cruise, providing real-time details on traffic and lane markers. Additionally, the infotainment display has a redesigned home screen with a split-view layout, allowing users to manage vehicle settings while keeping navigation visible, along with quick-access controls.
