'Never Knew:' Ford Dealership Says There’s a Secret Storage Compartment in F-150s. Here’s How to Access It

In a Valparaiso, Indiana car lot, an off-camera figure approaches the backseat of a Ford F-150 Raptor. The figure, whose face is never visible, removes the emergency key from the key fob of the truck and starts turning a discrete lock on the side of the backrow seat.

Secret passages, mysterious rooms and hidden compartments–those are the things kids daydream of. Apparently the car designers at Ford do too. Because the key unlocks a storage compartment far more intriguing than just another area beneath the center console tray. The key accesses a concealed, locked area beneath the seat.

Where is the F-150 Raptor’s Secret Compartment?

In the video, Ford of Valpo Performance (@fordofvalpoperformance) films a man holding up the key fob so it's clearly visible, then removes a mechanical key from within the fob sheathing. He inserts it into a spot on the Raptor’s driver’s side backseat.

The keyhole is fashioned to look unremarkable, like a piece of hardware. So you’d have to be looking closely or know it’s there to find it.

Even so, it would be very hard to get in without a key, and without drawing attention to an ill-intentioned attempt.

The TikTok has been viewed more than 151,000 times as of this writing. The comments section is strangely subdued, however.

One commenter simply said that this is new information to him. “Never knew you could lock the seat… 2020 F-250 bought new lol,” he wrote.

The Movement to Maximize Truck Utility

Fox News says adding secret compartments to trucks is an arms race of storage.

“Trucks do not typically have trunks, but there are more and more places to hide your junk in today’s trucks,” the outlet reports.

Manufacturers are getting creative, from adding compartments in the sides of one pickup bed to a “gear tunnel” between the cabin and the bed of another, as Rivian did.

Fox News also highlights the Ram RamBox, Chevy Silverados’ seatback compartment, and Honda Ridgelines’ in-bed trunk.

There are plenty of things people may prefer to secure in a secret compartment. Firearms, family heirlooms, cash, and important paperwork all leap to mind.
