Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster crowned best of show at Pebble Beach
The Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster has won "Best of Show" at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Mercedes-Benz has once again proven its dominance in the realm of collectible classic cars, as its 540 K Special Roadster (W 29) was awarded the coveted "Best of Show" title at the 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This significant win on Sunday, August 20, 2023, marks the tenth time a Mercedes-Benz vehicle has captured this honor since the event's inception in 1950, making it the most successful brand in the classic car event's history.
The 540 K Special Roadster is no ordinary classic. Originally commissioned by Mohammed Zahir Shah, the King of Afghanistan, in May 1937 and delivered later that year. Purchased at auction during Pebble Beach Automotive Week in 2022 for $9.9 million, the current owner, Jim Patterson, restored it to its original glory. The restoration process was conducted by RM Auto Restoration and the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre.
This Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster isn't just a collector's item; it's a piece of automotive history, maintained and preserved over seven decades through only five ownership changes. Its rich history, including being a gift for royalty and its journey from Afghanistan to Paris and then to Great Britain, only adds to its allure.
The vehicle's win at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is a triumph for Mercedes-Benz and the brand's commitment to authenticity, elegance, and timeless design. This victory solidifies Mercedes-Benz's place as a leader in the classic car scene, showcasing its remarkable expertise in maintaining and restoring iconic models.
