‘I’d Call the Police:’ Woman Stops at Stoplight. Then She Notices Something Unusual About the Trunk in Front of Her
"Kidnappers probably wouldn't."
A driver’s morbid curiosity was triggered by the sight of an external latch affixed to the trunk of a car. In front of her was what appeared to be a mid-2000s sedan.
The driver, who posts under the handle @blueb3rrysony, uploaded footage of the vehicle.
Some thought there was a mundane explanation as to why the car was outfitted with such a setup. Others were alarmed. Theories ranged from human trafficking to the driver being rear-ended and not having the time or money to fix the damage.
The video begins with a recording of a black sedan sitting in traffic at a red light. She zooms in to reveal a metal latch screwed to the car’s trunk.
A small, copper-tinted padlock is looped through the latch, making the setup look like something out of a horror movie.
“Saw this trunk locked and I just couldn’t help but wonder why,” @blueb3rrysony writes in a text overlay of her clip.

A DIY Fix or a Nefarious Plot?
Plenty of people who saw the post surmised that it was simply a quick fix for a busted lock.
“They might be keeping it from coming open,” one said.
Another opined, “Kidnappers probably wouldn’t put [a] suspicious lock on a container that already has an inconspicuous lock. Their trunk’s latch is probably just busted.”
“It could be an old car and the thing is broken. If it's not that then it is very suspicious for that to be there,” a third said.
Someone else noticed a key detail about the car: a missing back bumper. “Guessing on how the rear bumper is missing it got into an accident. So the latch doesn’t align with the lock so they added that to lock it,” they wrote.
At least one person was concerned.
“I’d call the police,” they wrote.
One of the people who replied to @blueb3rrysony’s video speculated the jerry-rigged latch had more to do with finances than kidnapping.
“Not everyone can afford to replace the actual car trunk lock…sometimes people need to improvise not everyone has money,” they said.
