Only one Ferrari Enzo ever left Maranello wearing Matte Nero Opaco, and it is back on the market. RM Sotheby's is offering the 2004 hypercar again through its private Sealed platform, so whatever it fetches this time stays off the books.

The car was originally commissioned by a member of the Brunei royal family, a detail that explains both the unusual paint and the six-figure restoration bill behind it. With roughly 400 Enzos built, this is the only one to skip the standard Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, or gloss Nero for a factory matte finish.

The matte paint was not a one-off whim tacked onto an existing order. Ferrari built the car from scratch in that finish in 2004, pairing it with a Nero leather cabin and Rosso gauges to keep the exterior and interior reading as one deliberate scheme, according to RM Sotheby's.

Underneath the paint, the Enzo carries the usual hardware that made it Ferrari's flagship at the time: a naturally aspirated V12 and Pininfarina bodywork by Ken Okuyama. What sets this particular chassis apart is condition, not mechanics. It shows just 3,567 miles since new.

That low mileage comes with a documented care history. Carrozzeria Zanasi, the same shop Ferrari uses for its Icona-series cars and Tailor-Made program, reworked the Enzo in 2022 at a cost of $127,000, replacing anything that needed attention and repainting it in the original Nero Opaco.

Since then, the car has been serviced by Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo and Ferrari of Vancouver, with 2024 work covering the clutch, both fuel pumps, and the left-side valve cover gasket.

Ferrari Enzo values currently span $7.7 million to $13 million depending on spec, and buyers chasing rare paint tend to sit at the top of that range, similar to how a Ferrari 250 GTO in a rare color commands attention beyond its mechanical specs.

Ferrari Enzo Royal-Family Provenance

Brunei's royal family has a long history of ordering bespoke cars from European manufacturers, and this Enzo fit that pattern from the start. It was meant to live at the family's London residence rather than tour the usual supercar circuit.

It still made the occasional appearance, spotted around Hampstead, Mayfair, and Knightsbridge before eventually being shipped to the Asia-Pacific region. Those sightings would have turned heads regardless of finish, but the matte black made the car unmistakable next to Enzos in shinier colors.

The car returned to Europe in 2022 for its Zanasi rework, then crossed to Canada, where it has stayed well-preserved since. That itinerary mirrors the kind of documented, multi-continent history that pushes rare Ferraris, like the rare Ferrari 288 GTO sold at Monterey, well past standard market comps.

Selling through RM Sotheby's Sealed platform means bidders negotiate privately rather than in a live room, and the final number will not be published. For context, a 2003 Enzo in gloss Nero D.S. over Rosso sold for $10,675,000 at Broad Arrow's The Quail auction this past August, a public benchmark this matte car will be judged against even though its own result stays confidential.

Motor1's Take: Factory matte paint and royal provenance make this Enzo uniquely desirable. Collectors who prize originality will compete hard. The sale result stays confidential, so dealers and buyers will look to past public Enzo auctions for pricing cues.
