The Porsche Mission S is one of the coolest concept cars to come from Stuttgart in recent history. The mid-engine supercar has nods to the company’s heritage in its design, while promising impressive specs when the platform debuts as a production car in just a few years. Hopefully.
One thing we still don’t know is what might power the Mission S. Reports have hinted at a few potential powertrain options, ranging from hybrids to eight-cylinders (or both), but new videos from the debut event in New York could provide some hints. Spoiler alert: It sounds fantastic.
Is That A Flat-Eight?
The most substantial rumor is that the Mission S will use a new flat-eight engine developed specifically for this platform. Hybridization is likely, but this would be the first use of a flat-eight in a Porsche production car.
Videos on Instagram seem to back those reports. Clips from content creators like UAESupersport, JustinsCarBlog, and MX.LYK show the Mission S on the move and revving during its New York debut.
From these short videos, it certainly sounds like Porsche is hiding an eight-cylinder engine underneath. Take a listen for yourself:
Porsche's Production Mission S
Beyond these clips, details on the Mission S are pretty slim. We know the mid-engine platform will support a new supercar above the 911, which is destined to debut in the lineup in just a few years.

The interior of the Mission S, meanwhile, forgoes screen overload in place of more tactile controls. Hell, there isn’t even a center touchscreen; Porsche simply fitted an Apple MagSafe mount for your iPhone.
Porsche still hasn’t provided a timeline for the Mission S’ debut, but we hope to see the supercar on the street in just a few years.
