Toyota has filed a federal recall for approximately 31,000 units of the 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid in the United States. A software error in the motor generator electronic control unit can cut power or shut the hybrid system down entirely while the SUV is moving at higher speeds.
The defect sits inside the same powertrain Toyota only recently priced for the 2026 model year. Owners do not need to do anything beyond watching the mail for recall notices, since the fix is a free dealer reflash once notification letters go out.

The campaign, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as recall number 26V659000 and internally coded by Toyota as 26TA22, covers approximately 31,000 model-year 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles built for the US market. Toyota traced the defect to a communication fault inside the motor generator ECU, first flagged by a field technical report out of Japan.
Jaguar Land Rover dealt with a broadly similar power-loss complaint across 170,000 Range Rovers and Jaguars recalled after a DC-DC converter issue in their mild-hybrid systems.
Toyota's own defect report shows the scope of the problem is still fairly contained. The automaker has logged a limited number of field reports and warranty claims tied to the US market, with no confirmed crashes or injuries reported so far.
The fix itself is straightforward with a software update to the motor generator ECU, done at no cost to the owner. Toyota is also handling a separate glitch on approximately 140,000 Camry sedans with blank speedometers, a reminder that software issues have become a recurring theme across the brand's recent lineup.

ECU Fault Can Reduce Or Shut Down Power
The root cause lives in how the motor generator ECU initializes at startup. If that process does not complete correctly, the higher-speed control mode for the electric motor generators is not available when the driver needs it.
What happens next depends on which motor generator fails. A rear motor generator failure forces the SUV into a fail-safe limp-home mode and disables rear-wheel drive. That leaves the vehicle driving on front-wheel power only.
A front motor generator failure at higher speeds is the scarier scenario. Toyota says it can shut down the entire plug-in hybrid system while the vehicle is still in motion. Lab and on-road testing confirmed the software bug can trigger a complete loss of motive power, not just a reduction.

Toyota is not new to this kind of power-loss trouble. The automaker issued a similar warning earlier this year for approximately 9,000 model year 2026 C-HR vehicles whose hybrid system can suddenly lose power. Both recalls show how software problems in electrified powertrains keep surfacing as these systems roll out across more models.
Dealers will reflash the motor generator ECU as the permanent fix, and the update carries no charge to owners regardless of warranty status. Toyota says owners of involved vehicles will be notified by early December 2026, and those who want to check their status now can run their vehicle identification number through Toyota's recall portal or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database rather than waiting on the postal schedule.
