A GMC Yukon Denali owner claims he’s turned his truck's factory cameras into a full-on security system that records with a simple gadget.

In the post, Kasyn Dunn (@kasyn_dunn) shares how a USB chip can be used to activate his GMC truck's cameras into a full security system that records any activity, whether the vehicle is on or not.

Dunn starts out by saying an unnamed company sent over a chip for him to use and how cool it is. He says the chip works on 2024 and 2025 Denalis when inserted into the center console. This chip will purportedly enable the factory cameras in the truck to record any activity around it. When Bluetooth is connected with your phone, it’ll reportedly record everything.

“It’ll record everything that happens around your truck. When you are not in the truck, it uses all the factory 360 cameras, so if anybody messes with your [explicit] this thing records it,” Dunn says.

After explaining the chip, he shows how it can easily be installed into a USB port in the center console of the Yukon.

“We’ll get it figured out tomorrow and I’ll show you guys how it works” he concludes.

“Now that’s something I’ve been wanting. That’s awesome,” one TikTok commenter added.

Dunn’s post has over 20,000 views.

While the interest is real, the proof isn’t available to verify the remarks in his TikTok are true.

How to Use the Surround Vision Recorder From GMC

According to GMC, the Surround Vision Recorder can be enabled when the vehicle is turned on. This includes recording, viewing, and saving videos that your vehicle captures while your vehicle is on.

It appears the system doesn’t work when the vehicle is turned off, as GMC only mentions recording can take place with the vehicle on.

When Surround Vision Recorder is enabled, this feature will save all videos onto a USB that needs to be inserted in the front console. The recording system can capture footage in two-hour loops at a time. All footage can be reviewed while the car is on and in park with the recording app on the center display.

However, GMC drivers have reported issues with enabling Surround Vision Recorder on Facebook and Reddit.

“I’ve had two separate vandalisms. Sure would be nice if one of these 9 cameras would let me record like a Tesla does. With research, I found this is possible, but can’t seem to get it working on this new truck,” one Redditor shared.

“Still no success getting Surround Vision Recorder to work,” another Denali driver shared on Facebook.

“The software is there but the app needs to be updated to support the function. I have tried every way possible, asked a service tech (who had no clue what I was talking about),” another Facebook user said.

While the cameras and technology appear to exist, the results vary.

Dunn claims the USB chip he got can record while the vehicle is off, a key feature that could be the difference between catching a thief or vandal and never finding them. But until he posts a follow-up, it remains to be seen if this is true.
