Land Croomy: Kei car that is half off-roader, half camper
The Japanese tuner ESB is responsible for this adorable and friendly vehicle.
We will never tire of saying that there is always room for surprise in the world of camper vans and motorhomes. If we leave the European market, we can find real wonders, which surprise us in terms of image and size.
And that is exactly the case here. Japanese tuners ESB have come up with the CLS Fox Land Croomy, an unspeakable vehicle. From the outside, it looks like an off-roader like the Toyota Land Cruiser. In terms of size it could be described as a kei car, while inside it has the features of an MPV and a camper van.

As we said, the new CLS-Fox 'Land Croomy' may look like a camper van, but it is poorly equipped for a trip away from civilisation, with little more than an interior bed and a roof box for luggage.
It's not exactly a kei car either. With a length of 3.70 metres and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine, the Toyota Roomy, manufactured by Daihatsu and marketed in Japan, is not exactly a kei car van (a category that applies to vehicles no longer than 340 cm with engines up to 660 cm3).

The Roomy is a tiny but very nimble MPV (turning circle 4.6m). It is one of those camper vans that are so popular in Japan and Korea that they sometimes surprise us western motorhome fans.
In this case, ESB has turned the entire rear of the Roomy, from the front seat backs to the tailgate, into a large padded cushion that is only 1.55 metres long. So if you're taller than 1.55 metres, you'll find it hard to lie down lengthways.

At 125 cm wide, the bed mattress is wide enough for two people, but not long enough for two adults. ESB doesn't say whether the CLS-Fox Roomy is a day camper or a solo adventure camper, but the only photo of a girl sitting on the mattress suggests the former.
On the outside, ESB has added an Inno roof box, increased ground clearance, raised the suspension by 3cm and fitted Toyo Open Country 165/65R15 tyres, ideal for rough terrain. Steel wheels, in white to match the bodywork, add a touch of personal style.

Mechanically, ESB makes no mention of any changes to the powertrain, so we have to assume that the standard turbocharged engine will continue to deliver the same 97 PS and 140 Nm of torque as the standard model.

Let's talk prices. The Toyota Roomy starts in Japan at 1,916,110 yen (approx. £10,000 at current exchange rates) after taxes and fees, with a 4x4 version available from 2,096,410 yen (£10,900). ESB's CLS-Fox components can be purchased separately, at a cost of 295,000 yen (£1,500) for the suspension lift, four steel wheels, front and rear bumpers and interior cushions; the Inno roof box is not included. This kit is also available for the Daihatsu Thor and Subaru Justy.
