Joins the R8 LMS GT3 and RS 3 LMS in Audi Sport's race car portfolio.
Audi Sport took the wraps off the track-only R8 LMS GT4 back in April on the occasion of the New York Auto Show, but it’s only now the company’s motorsport division is beginning to accept customer orders. It is currently available in Europe and carries a starting price at home in Germany of €198,000 (about $232,000), without taking into account VAT. It can also be ordered in North America, Asia, and Australia for prospective buyers eager to have some fun on the track with the race car largely based on the road-going R8 V10.
Billed as being the “ideal race car for amateur campaigners,” the new R8 LMS GT4 uses the same naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 as the street-legal model. Depending on the type of racing you will be doing, the engine can be dialed to deliver a maximum 495 horsepower (364 kilowatts) and in excess of 550 Newton-meters (405 pound-feet) of torque.
Unlike the Quattro-equipped R8 V10 you can drive on public roads, the race car has been engineered with a rear-wheel-drive layout receiving the engine’s power through a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox. As a side note, this is not the only R8 to feature a tail-happy layout as Audi Sport recently unveiled the R8 V10 RWS special edition limited to 999 units available in both Coupe and Spyder flavors.
Getting back to the GT4-spec race car, it does 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in under four seconds and tops out at more than 155 mph (250 kph), but that depends on the settings. Without any fluids in it, the race car tips the scales at only 1,460 kilograms (3,219 pounds) after getting rid of the Quattro system and luxury amenities you get on the regular R8 V10.
Audi says it will kick off customer deliveries of the R8 LMS GT4 in December.
