Volkswagen's turn signal stalk just got a new trick. Partially press it above 45 miles per hour with Travel Assist engaged and the 2027 Atlas, ID.Buzz, Golf and Tiguan will check their blind spots and change lanes on their own.

Travel Assist with driver-initiated lane change already appeared on earlier Volkswagen models, and the 2027 IQ.Drive update enhances that capability across this group. Emergency Assist Plus, updated Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control and a pedestrian-detecting rearview camera round out the package.

Upgrades On 2027 Models

The assisted lane change leans on radar sensors to scan adjacent traffic before committing. If the lane is busy, Travel Assist holds the request for up to 12 seconds and flashes a directional arrow on the Digital Cockpit while it waits for a gap.

The ID.Buzz gets its own visual language here, with a white flashing arrow instead of the green one used on internal combustion models and a red hash warning if the target lane stays occupied. It is a small detail that helps drivers who switch between VW body styles.

Emergency Assist Plus builds on Volkswagen's existing Emergency Assist driver-monitoring function. If there is no steering input for several seconds, the system issues escalating visual and acoustic alerts and brake jerks, keeps the vehicle in its lane and can slow it to a controlled stop.

Under certain conditions the updated system can also guide the vehicle toward the right shoulder, then bring it to a halt, shift into park, unlock the doors and place an emergency call. If the shoulder is blocked, it settles for the rightmost lane instead with the hazard lights on.

ID.Buzz, Atlas, Tiguan And Golf Key Updates

Rear pedestrian detection is added to the Atlas family, Tiguan and ID.Buzz. Reversing between one and six miles per hour, the camera watches for pedestrians behind the vehicle and applies the brakes automatically if someone walks into the path.

Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control has been part of Volkswagen's assistance toolkit for years, using map and sign data to anticipate curves, junctions and speed limits. For 2027 the software reacts more quickly to posted changes and works more smoothly in varied traffic.

The cruise system also extends to highway ramps, managing exit deceleration and lane placement based on either the turn signal or the active navigation route. It moves beyond straight-line highway cruising, though VW is careful to frame it as supervised assistance, not hands-free driving. Volkswagen's own materials describe IQ.Drive as Level 2 assistance that still requires an attentive driver, not an autonomous system**.**

Road Experience Management data now folds into the In-Vehicle Premium subscription, with the 2027 ID.Buzz including a one-year trial alongside Premium Navigation, Wi-Fi Hotspot and AirConsole gaming. US-spec ID.Buzz production resumes with the 2027 model year, with builds starting in summer and deliveries planned for early fall.

Motor1's Take: The update makes daily driving easier for buyers who switch among VW models and for families worried about rear collisions. Dealers will pitch these features as selling points. Watch how the assisted lane change handles dense traffic. Regulators and insurers will watch incident data and software rollouts. Take a test drive first.
