Last year, Subaru WRX sales fell off a cliff. The once-beloved sports sedan seemingly wasn't as popular as it once was. But Subaru finally made some manufacturing and trim changes, and now things are looking up.

Subaru sold 1,778 WRX sedans in August, a whopping 191.0 percent increase over the same month last year. Sales for the sedan are up 37.7 percent so far for the year.

Part of that sales increase could be the result of the automaker introducing a cheaper entry-level trim. In January, Subaru resurrected the base WRX for 2026, shaving over $5,000 off the price tag, which certainly hasn’t hurt.

The WRX is on track to crush last year’s sales results. In 2025, the company sold 10,930 cars, a 41.2 percent decrease. Through August, WRX sales are already at 10,324.

Subaru ended August on the upswing, with sales up 1.3 percent for the month. The Japanese automaker sold 62,028 cars last month but has sold 3.0 percent fewer cars so far this year, at 423,822.

Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, said:

'Our strong performance reflects what makes Subaru unique, with a versatile lineup that delivers the safety, capability, and long-term value customers expect.'

The Crosstreck was the brand’s best-selling model last month despite sales falling 4.4 percent. They are down 4.3 percent for the year, but it still outsold the Forester at 16,760, which saw sales jump 17.8 percent in August. Forester sales are up 15.1 percent for the year.

The BRZ had a decent August, with sales up 6.8 percent to 235, but they are down 4.1 percent year over year. The Ascent is doing well, with sales up 2.4 percent for the year after a stellar month—sales rose 37.2 percent.

Motor1’s Take: Despite the WRX's stellar sales month, the car is not popular enough to make a significant contribution to the brand's overall sales. The brand's crossovers remain its most popular models, and will likely continue to outsell the WRX by a wide margin for the foreseeable future.
