Alpine's A110 Successor Might Keep Its Gas Engine

Alpine CEO Philippe Krief says that a hybrid version of the sports car may be in the works.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A car company plans to replace its beloved sports car with an EV, only to reconsider following a market slowdown. Porsche tried it with the 718 Boxster and Cayman. Now, Alpine may be following suit.

The successor to the iconic A110 sports car, originally slated to be electric only, may now be joined by a combustion version—specifically a hybrid. In an interview with UK’s Evo, Alpine CEO Philippe Krief hinted that the next-generation sports car could come in both electric and hybrid gas-powered variants.

Krief didn’t offer a clear explanation for the shift in strategy, but considering the recent slowdown in EV demand and the tepid response to electric sports cars, the move isn’t exactly surprising.

Krief says the new A110—offered in both hybrid and fully electric versions—is expected to arrive in early 2027. It will be available as a two-seater coupe, a convertible, and even a 2+2 configuration with rear seats. He also teased that "the design of the new one will make the current car look old."

While a new combustion-powered sports car from Alpine is exciting on its own, the EV version should be no slouch either. The electric coupe will feature a dual-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup with more than the 464 horsepower currently available in the A390 SUV. It will also use a bespoke battery pack, with a target curb weight under 3,000 pounds.

Alpine also aims to make the battery pack fully replaceable, allowing owners to upgrade to newer batteries over time and avoid long-term degradation. When it hits the market, Alpine hopes the electric A110 will go head-to-head with Porsche’s upcoming electric 718 Boxster and Cayman.
