The year 2025 will mark a fundamental step for BMW in its electrification strategy. The debut of the Neue Klasse platform, designed specifically for 100 per cent electric models, represents a clear change of strategy for the Bavarian manufacturer, which currently uses the same platform - accompanied by virtually identical designs - for its combustion and electric ranges.

The first model to mark the paradigm shift will be the new BMW iX3, a battery-powered version of the mid-size SUV, scheduled for the second half of 2025. From the current generation it will only inherit the name, the rest will be unprecedented. Starting with the styling, as the images filed by the company with the patent office show.

Extra small double kidney

The first detail that catches the eye is the design of the classic double kidney grille, which is much smaller than on the new X3 and has a vertical orientation, as on the BMWs of the '60s and '70s as well as the Neue Klasse X, the concept presented last March.

It is precisely from the prototype that the new BMW iX3 will take its inspiration to define its own style, made up of soft, angular lines, horizontally developed front and rear light clusters and an overall appearance that, while in terms of proportions does not stray far from the BMW model. In terms of general appearance it renews it in many respects. The patents do not show the interior, which could take up the general structure of the Neue Klasse X, eliminating the classic concept excesses.

New soul

The most important aspect, however, will concern the mechanics. As mentioned, in fact, the new BMW iX3 will debut on the Neue Klasse platform, which will be used for all future BMW electric vehicles. So goodbye, then, to the Power of Choice philosophy that has distinguished Munich production for years, with design and mechanics shared between combustion and plug-in versions.

Going into the details, we know that the new mechanics will no longer mount prismatic cells but cylindrical ones, provided by various suppliers such as CATL, Eve and Envision AESC. The chemistry used remains unknown, while we know that the voltage will be 800 volts.

Tell us what you think!

As far as range is concerned, it should be 30% higher than the current 30 per cent longer than current electrics, for a total presumably over 372 miles, calculated according to the WLTP cycle. Drive should be rear or all-wheel drive, with a motor for each axle, depending on the version.
