Porsche was on a steady path toward electrifying its entire lineup. But… things changed. Now, the company is developing a handful of new gas-powered models, including a long-awaited 918 replacement at the top of its lineup. Praise be.
The company confirmed the news during 2026 Capital Markets Day, with CEO Michael Leiters saying that a "mid-engined super sports car platform" would sit above the 911 lineup. He even suggested that it could spawn an entire “model line” of high-performance super sports cars.
Most of the technical details remain under wraps, but here’s what we know about Porsche’s new hypercar so far.
What Will Power Porsche's New Supercar?

Porsche Le Mans Living Legend Concept
Porsche confirmed that the new hypercar will have a mid-engined layout. What kind of engine will it have exactly? That remains a mystery.
Previous reports hint at a flat-eight engine. It would be Porsche's first production flat-eight, but technically not the first flat-eight the company has developed for a road car. In 2023, Porsche built a concept powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter flat-eight producing 750 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. It revved to 9,000 rpm and sent power through a manual transmission.
Porsche said the engine "wasn't the right car for that moment in time." Maybe the time is right now.
What Platform Could It Use?

Rather than developing an entirely new platform from scratch, Porsche could look to its Volkswagen Group stablemates for the hardware. One report suggests the company could use the new Audi Nuvolari platform, which is essentially a reworked version of the architecture underneath the Lamborghini Temerario.
What Will Porsche's New Supercar Be Called?
Porsche's modern naming strategy is all about numbers: 718, 911, 918, and so on. We don't expect that to change with this rumored supercar.
Porsche previously used the 919 name for a supercar concept inspired by its Le Mans racer, suggesting a potential successor to the 918 Spyder. That name could still make sense for the new car.
Early reports say Porsche is using "S1" as an internal codename, but don't expect that name to make it to production. The company also teased a so-called "Mission S Concept," but we don’t expect that nameplate to make it to final production, either.
What Will the Production Version Look Like?

2028 Porsche Supercar Rendering By Motor1
The Mission X concept took inspiration from Le Mans prototypes like the 919 Hybrid. We did the same with our rendering.
The concept's most striking feature is its doors, which open forward and upward. Vertical headlights sit on either side of a pointed nose, while massive air intakes at the bottom of the bumper help with cooling and aerodynamics.

A glass bubble wraps around the cabin, which features deep bucket seats, contrasting colors, exposed carbon fiber, six-point harnesses, and an F1-inspired steering wheel. That glass canopy flows into a sleek rear end with an integrated spoiler and an illuminated Porsche logo flanked by slim taillights.
Hopefully, the production car looks a lot like the Mission X. It's still unclear, though, how many of those design cues will actually make it to the road.
How Big Will It Be?
The Mission X concept is relatively compact by modern supercar standards. At 177.0 inches long, it's about 6.0 inches shorter than the 918 Spyder's 182.9-inch body and a full 10.0 inches shorter than the 187.0-inch Rimac Nevera.
It's also 2.0 inches wider than the 918 Spyder and shares the same 107.5-inch wheelbase.
How Much Will Porsche’s New Supercar Cost?
Expect Porsche's new supercar to cost well into six figures. Reports suggest it could be priced at roughly twice what Porsche charges for a 911 GT3 RS in its home market. If that's accurate, the new car could start around $500,000, if not more.
For comparison, the 918 Spyder went on sale in 2013 for $845,000, while the current Audi Nuvolari costs roughly $700,000.

Production is also expected to be limited. Porsche built just 918 examples of the 918 Spyder, while the Carrera GT was capped at 1,270 cars. The 959 was even rarer, with just 292 examples produced.
When Will We See It?
Details are still scarce, but if everything goes according to plan, we could see Porsche's new supercar sometime in 2027. A concept could arrive as early as this year.
