S1 development continues as seen in these latest photos of a prototype sporting the signature S-brand quad exhaust pipe layout at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

Back in 2010 Audi came close to naming the range topping A1 1.4 TFSI the S1 but decided against it since the vehicle was not an all-wheel drive model - as are all S-brand models. Subsequently, in reaction to feedback received on the A1 1.4 TFSI when it debuted at the Paris Motor Show, Audi then decided to go ahead and build an S1 model with quattro technology. Also helping to make the business case was the tentative decision to build a Volkswagen Polo R. Despite prototypes seen testing, it remains to be seen if a Polo R will become reality.

Nonetheless, S1 development continues as seen in these latest photos of a prototype sporting the signature S-brand quad exhaust pipe layout at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany. Furthermore, Audi has already shown us with the exclusive limited edition A1 Quattro that the model is imminent. Latest reports say the S1 will be based on the 256 PS (188 kW / 252 hp) A1 Quattro but feature a detuned 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 220 PS (162 kW / 217 bhp).

The Audi S1 is expected to arrive in the second half of 2013.
