Nebraska Car Insurance Requirements

Nebraska state law requires that all drivers maintain at least a 25/50/25 liability auto insurance policy and 25/50 uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance policy. These numbers represent the following policy limits:

  • $25,000 per person bodily injury liability
  • $50,000 per accident bodily injury liability
  • $25,000 per accident property damage liability
  • $25,000 per person uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
  • $50,000 per accident uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

While these are the state minimum coverage requirements, it is generally recommended that you maintain a full coverage auto insurance policy. This means purchasing collision coverage and comprehensive coverage in addition to the coverage mentioned above.

Drivers who don’t maintain at least the state minimum-required coverage can have their license and registration suspended. To have these things reinstated, drivers must provide proof of insurance and pay a $50 reinstatement fee for each. This is a low penalty compared to other states, which have much higher fines and can even give drivers jail time for driving without insurance.

Cost Of Nebraska Car Insurance

Compared to the national average, Nebraska car insurance is very affordable. The table below shows average cost data in 2017 according to a report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Type of Coverage Average Annual Expenditure
Liability coverage $417.31
Collision coverage $263.68
Comprehensive coverage $253.30
Total cost $766.89

*To calculate average expenditures, NAIC assumed that all insured vehicles would carry liability coverage but not necessarily collision or comprehensive. Total cost per year measures what consumers actually spent.

The average car insurance payment varies by state, but it also varies by individual. There is no standard price that every driver will pay for Nebraska car insurance, and rates are determined based on factors such as:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Marital status
  • Driving record
  • Location

What To Know About Driving In Nebraska

In 2018, Nebraskans drove an average of 14,768 miles per licensed driver, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS also reported that there were 230 auto deaths in Nebraska for the same year (11.9 deaths per 100,000 people). This is slightly higher than the national average of 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people.

Be sure to take care when driving in Nebraska. Winter conditions can make roads dangerous, with ice and large snowfalls making driving more difficult. Always adjust your speed based on local weather and never forget to wear your seatbelt.
