Coronavirus derailed Volkswagen’s debut of the GTI, but it remains to be seen what the bug will do to the Golf R’s introduction. Development is very far along on the hot hatch, as evidenced by nearly undisguised models running around the Nurburgring in April 2020. Volkswagen has suggested the new Golf R will be “a real driving machine” that enjoys “a lot of small improvements” over its predecessor. Expect all-wheel drive to stick around, and likely an uprated version of the GTI’s 2.0-liter engine.
