Status: Redesign
Release Date: Summer 2019

As Volkswagen attempts to recover from Dieselgate, the trusty Golf has done much of the heavy lifting — the affordable compact hatchback remains well-liked even as the brand’s reputation suffers. That means VW really needs to hit a home run with the Golf’s upcoming redesign. As usual, styling is likely to be a conservative evolution of the current model. The e-Golf won’t be joining the eighth generation, since the new I.D. lineup will take over for the brand’s fully-electric needs. However, a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf is anticipated alongside the sporty Golf GTI (which is also rumored to be a candidate for hybridization). Pricing and powertrain information will be available closer to launch.
