Presented in Frankfurt, the prototype showed technological elements tested in Audi's Le Mans racing car, such as FSI fuel delivery technology, and others that would become part of the final production model, such as LED lights.

The study had a 5.0-liter V10 biturbo engine with 610 hp (455 kW), which was replaced by a more down-to-earth 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 with 450 hp (335 kW) in the production R8.
