Senna moved to Formula One in 1984 and drove for the Toleman team. However, one of his greatest performances that year came behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16.

Both Mercedes' performance sedan and the Nürburgring Grand Prix course were new at the time, and the event's organizers saw this as a perfect opportunity. They invited upcoming stars like Senna and Alain Prost, in addition to former F1 World Champions like Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, John Surtees, Denny Hulme, Niki Lauda, James Hunt, Jody Scheckter, Alan Jones, and Keke Rosberg.

Senna beat the former champions and the rest to win the event.
