It’s not very well known that the California was in fact originally supposed to be a Maserati but its high development cost meant that when it was launched in 2008 it wore the Prancing Horse instead.

The car presented a number of firsts for Ferrari – the first folding hard top, the first font-engined V8, the first with a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, the first with multi-link rear suspension, and the first with direct petrol injection. Not bad for an "entry-level" car.
