Equipped as standard with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission (with shift by wire), the new Touareg comes with five selectable driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Individual. Four extra optional models can be had at an additional cost by getting the Off-road pack: off-road auto, sand, gravel, and off-road expert.

Aside from adding the four extra modes, the optional kit comes along with a larger fuel tank (from 70 to 90 liters), reinforced underbody protection, two towing eyes, tank guard and stone impact protection, and a guard element for the 12-volt battery.

There’s a central differential lock that works as a transfer box between the two axles, with up to 70 percent of the available torque transferrable to the front wheels while the rear axle can receive as much as 80 percent of the torque.
