Offered as optional equipment, the full-LED matrix headlights encompass 128 light-emitting diodes per cluster and can be individually activated. The dipped beam consists of 48 LEDs whereas the main beam boasts 27 LEDs. The rest until 128 are the daytime running lights, position lights, animated indicators, and for the cornering function.

Compared to the previous model’s xenon setup, the new LED arrangement has increased illumination range by more than 100 meters (328 feet). In addition, the light distribution varies greatly: urban light, rural road light, oncoming vehicle light, motorway dipped beam, motorway main beam, overtaking light, main beam, poor weather light, sign glare reduction light, and off-road light.

While all the above are pretty much self-explanatory, there’s also a marker light. It refers to the Touareg models equipped with Night Vision when the headlights flash briefly so that the driver can better see the people detected by the infrared camera.
