More upgrades are on the way, too.
Hennessey’s latest project has the Texas-based tuner stepping away from getting huge power out of burly V8s and instead giving the new Ford Focus RS’ 2.3-liter EcoBoost some attention. The firm’s HPE400 kit turns out the output to 405 horsepower (302 kilowatts) and 425 pound-feet (576.2 Newton-meters) of torque versus 350 hp (261 kW) and 350 lb-ft (474.5 Nm) in stock trim.
The HPE400 kit’s biggest mechanical upgrade is a stainless steel mid-pipe with an electronic exhaust dump valve. The package also includes a high-flow air filter and upgraded engine management software. Hennessey badges complete the changes. According to Auto Express, the collection will be available next month at $2,995 just for the parts or $4,995 for the components, plus installation and dyno tuning.
Power-hungry customers who can be patient might want to wait a little longer because Hennessey promises bigger upgrades are on the way. For example, the firm is working on things like intercooler improvements, a better exhaust, and improved turbo, but the company doesn’t say when these components might be ready.
The other big name in Focus RS tuning right now is Mountune’s kit for the hot hatch. The company's package includes a custom air filter, new air re-circulation valve, an alloy crossover duct with silicone hoses, and an engine software upgrade. After installation, the RS produces 375 hp (276 kW) and 376 lb-ft (510 Nm).
While Ford Performance already sells Mountune upgrades for the latest Focus RS in the United States, this kit isn’t among the offerings yet. If it does arrive, the improvements might be cheaper than the Hennessey offering because this package retails for 899 pounds ($1,195) in the United Kingdom.
Rather than upgrading the new RS, there’s also an argument for waiting to see what Ford does with the RS500. Rumors suggest the limited-edition model would push the output to 400 hp (298 kW) and reduce as much as 220 pounds (100 kilograms) from the overall weight. Spy photos show it wearing a vented hood and larger wing, too.
