The high-performance sedan will likely arrive next year.
A new set of spy shots gives us yet another look at the next-gen BMW M5, and the high-performance sedan doesn't appear to have any problems handling the heat of hot-weather testing in the Mojave Desert. This four-door doesn’t have the weird camouflage on the front like the last one, so we can get a better look upcoming design changes, too.
BMW's designers opt to evolve the 5 Series' styling for the new generation rather than give it an overhaul. Like in previous spy photos, the M5 has a different front fascia with larger intakes than the standard sedan. This one also has the production-spec headlights that use LEDs to emulate the look of classic Bimmer lights. At the back, dual exhausts are at each corner. The big brakes also appear up to the task of bringing the high-horsepower four-door to a halt.
The next-gen M5 will reportedly stick with the same 4.4-liter biturbo V8, but some tuning will potentially push the output to 617 horsepower (460 kilowatts). A manual gearbox won’t be available, though, because of a lack of demand. The performance will be sharper, too, because the new 5 Series platform will be around 220 pounds (100 kilograms) lighter than the current chassis. The upgrades will certainly allow the new sedan to accelerate quicker than the current M5 Competition Edition’s sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 3.9 seconds. According to rumors, the new model will be available with an optional rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, which will give drivers a little more confidence in slippery situations.
The standard version of the next-generation 5 Series should debut this year – possibly at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. A staggered launch means that the M5 might not arrive until sometime late next year, though. By the time it hits the road, the new Mercedes-AMG E63 should already be available as the Bimmer’s major competitor.
