The tweaks should add some excitement when drivers want to have some extra fun.

The 2017 Ford Fusion V6 Sport allows customers to enjoy a performance sedan but still be able to haul the whole family inside. When the kids aren’t in the back, mom and dad can have some extra fun by pressing the Sport button on the rotary gear knob. This magical switch transforms the four-door from a cruiser into a meaner machine.

The Sport button retunes seven aspects of the hottest Fusion’s drivetrain. Among the most obvious changes is that the transmission remains in lower gears longer and rev-matches through downshifts when braking. The hardcore setting also increases the dampers’ stiffness, which minimizes body roll when cornering. The steering, throttle, and paddle shift response become quicker, too. Occupants can also notice the difference because of different tuning for the in-cabin noise cancellation, which brings more of the engine's sound inside.

The Sport’s biggest attraction is under the hood where the sport sedan boasts a 2.7-liter EcoBoost biturbo V6 325 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic sends the grunt through an all-wheel-drive system. Fuel economy isn’t the engine’s strong suit though because the Environmental Protection Agency rates it at 26 miles per gallon highway and 17 mpg city.

The V6 Sport starts at $34,350 (after $875 destination) and is the second-most expensive trim in the model’s lineup. It comes with high-end standard equipment, though, including LED headlights and continuously controlled damping, which avoids the judder from hitting a pothole.

The performance sedan is a new addition to the lineup as part of the Fusion’s 2017 model year refresh. The upgrades also result in a much safer vehicle. Recent testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety scored the four-door as a Top Safety Pick+, including much better performance than before in the small overlap front crash test. The agency also rated it as having a Superior front crash prevention tech as long as the models have the automatic braking system.
