The Seat factory in Spain will handle production.

After a refresh in late 2014, the tiny Audi A1 is due for a new generation in a couple years, and the upgraded hatchback reportedly aims to lure buyers by offering an abundance of high-tech toys, Auto Express reports. On track as a 2018 model, Audi is taking the next A1 further upmarket to differentiate the vehicle from VW Group’s other small offerings.

The next A1 would share the smallest version of the MQB platform with Volkswagen Group’s other small hatchbacks, like the next VW Polo and Seat Ibiza. While the overall footprint shouldn’t change much, the new chassis means a longer wheelbase, which allows for more interior room. Once behind the wheel, drivers can expect amenities from larger Audis like the brand’s impressive Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster and improved MMI infotainment system. The cabin’s materials should be better, too. A small city car reportedly arrives later to expand the lineup with a less expensive Audi. 

Customers should have multiple tunes of two small-displacement engines to choose from. A 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder would serve has the base powerplant, but buyers could also upgrade to diesel and gasoline versions of a 1.5-liter mill. A plug-in hybrid might eventually join the range, too. There would also be a new S1, but we don’t have powertrain details for it, yet. The brand is quite clear there are no plans for a range-topping RS1.

Audi likely won’t have such major changes for the exterior styling. Expect a sharper look overall to match the latest A4 and A5, but the brand doesn’t want to deviate too far from the current shape.

As previously rumored, Audi will shift A1 production to Seat’s Martorell factory near Barcelona, Spain, where VW Group will build it alongside the next-gen Ibiza.
