Fiat 500 Jolly

What do you get for the person who has everything? The adorable Fiat Jolly, of course, which was also affectionately known as “La Spiaggina,” loosely translated as “beach-ette.” It certainly looked the part, with its Ghia designed-and-built body featuring cut-down sides, chromed pipe-work, wicker seats and festive surrey top. Color choices included coral, pink, pale yellow, sky blue and white.

Produced between 1958 and 1966, many business, film and social luminaries of the era, including Aristotle Onassis, Yul Brynner and the late Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli used the vehicles as beach and estate cars, golf carts and yacht tenders.

A rear-mounted 479 cc two-cylinder engine with overhead valves, just like its Fiat 500 progenitor, powered the Jolly, which weighed merely 1,050 lbs and could reach 56 mph while achieving fuel economy of 52 mpg. Priced at nearly twice as much as a standard Fiat 500, the Jolly was quite a costly fashion accessory, helping to explain the remarkably low mileage exhibited by the majority of survivors. Between 1958 and 1961, the Jolly was briefly imported to the United States. While never a high-volume product, an estimated 650 examples were produced between 1958 and 1966, with just 100 believed to remain today.

This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in March of 2011 at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida.
