Rolls-Royce Phantom I Brougham Limousine de Ville
In 1925, Rolls-Royce introduced the “New Phantom,” successor to the long-running but aging Silver Ghost. Although the chassis was an evolution of the Ghost, the engine was new, with overhead valves and larger displacement of 7,668 cc.
The blind rear quarters identify this car as Barker’s Brougham Limousine de Ville. Painted in what Mr. Tallman refers to as “Hershey Chocolate Bar Brown,” it has faux cane-work on the lower rear body, a black rear-mounted trunk and full body-color wheel discs, a Barker hallmark. There are coach-lamps mounted on the center pillars and side-lamps on the front fenders. Headlamps are Lucas Biflex units. A single spare tire is carried in the right front fender. The graceful Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, of course, appears on the radiator cap.
The passenger compartment is upholstered in linen. Jump seats fold down from the center division, and there is an under-seat heater at the rear, as well as in front. The compartment is outfitted with mirrored and lighted vanity cabinets in the rear quarters, a small skylight and a set of glasses with decanter. The division bulkhead has a sliding window. The open chauffeur’s compartment has a fabric roof, green leather seat and a handsome burl walnut dashboard. There is a Smiths clock and a 90-mph A.T. speedometer, with the odometer indicating 8,089, in addition to the customary engine instrumentation.
The engine compartment is clean but not over-detailed. We are told the car runs well, having been driven regularly and thoroughly enjoyed. The epitome of the British limousine of the 1920s, this Phantom I is a very special Town Car design and appropriate for any formal occasion or star-studded event.
This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in March of 2011 at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida and in October of 2011 at the Hershey Lodge, Hershey, Pennsylvania.
