Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster

Introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the 190 SL complemented the 300 SL as a more affordable and equally stylish alternative conceived, like so many other convertibles, by the importer Max Hoffman. Writing of their experiences, Autocar’s editors remarked, “It proved to be fast and tireless, exhilarating to drive, and was obviously created with long distance, comfortable travel in mind.”

The 190 SL was one of the dream cars of the 1950s from Mercedes-Benz. It was based on the engineering of the three-box body sedans and, stylistically, presented itself as the little brother of the 300 SL. The owners of the sporty convertible included the Ismali ruler Karim Aga Khan, actresses Grace Kelly and Zsa Zsa Gabor and Gina Lollobrigida, and authoress Francoise Sagan.

This increasingly desirable and very driveable roadster from Mercedes is seeing a considerable amount of renewed interest from collectors, and a superbly restored example in very attractive colours such as the car offered here is an opportunity not to be missed. Given that a recent edition of the Italian classic car magazineRuoteclassiche singled this model out as having superb future investment potential, now is the ideal time to acquire such a stylish and prestigious, yet affordable, Mercedes-Benz roadster.

This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in May of 2010 at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco.
