eep holds the title for building the first luxury 4x4 that was produced and sold through numerous marques from 1963 up to 1991. First introduced as a successor to the Willy’s Jeep Station Wagon that was being built since the end of World War II. Based on the Jeep SJ platform, the Wagoneer pioneered the sport utility vehicle concept and offered features that were unheard of at the time in any other mainstream 4WD vehicle. Base MSRP $4,300
Looking at the Wagoneer now, some may say it looks like an oversized station wagon, and that was precisely Jeep’s goal with the Wagoneer. With the large station wagon-like rear end, storage was maximized and allowed the car to be much more versatile and usable as a daily-driver. The small hood scoop at the front of the hood paired with the egg crate-style grill, adds some aggression to the looks while also being a working air intake. On the both sides of the vehicle, a small strip of wood paneling shows tribute to the previous Jeeps that had large wood panels on the sides. Being at a stance so high off the ground also allowed all-terrain driving without having to worry about getting caught up on rocks or debris in the driver’s path.
Being that convenience and comfort features were not standard on many other mainstream 4WD vehicles, the Wagoneer appeared as the most luxurious option. Features included a push-button radio, power steering, power brakes, power tailgate, and a seven-position tilting steering wheel. Other amenities include ceiling courtesy lights, air conditioning, and a console-shifted TH400 automatic transmission. Leather wraps the bucket seats, steering wheel, dashboard, and door panels.
Powered by Buick’s 350 cubic inch 5.7-liter Dauntless V8, the Wagoneer had 230 horsepower and produced 350 lb-ft of torque. Reaching 60 mph took about 10 seconds and the Wagoneer could accelerate to a top speed of 100 mph.
