A woman pulled up to a Racetrac and was surprised to discover six different fuel choices. So great was her befuddlement that she had to call for backup.

Yeni (@dailydoseofyeni) shared the tale of the arguably embarrassing situation in a recent TikTok.

“Okay, I have to admit something cause I’m not gonna just let my husband be the one to tell our friends. Yes, I called my husband because I didn’t know which one to pick,” Yeni begins.

At the Racetrac, Yeni shows the six choices that had her playing a guessing game. There are four different nozzles.

“There was this one, then this one, and then this one and that one and they’re all these [expletive]. I know it’s not diesel. I know it probably shouldn’t be these,” she says.

She began a process of elimination and easily ruled out diesel and the E-85 gasoline. But what left her stumped was whether she should choose the unleaded 88 oil or the unleaded 87. She initially planned to choose the 88 as it was the furthest to the left. But then she recalled her vehicle takes regular 87.

“So there babe, I beat you to it. Can’t make fun of me bye,” she concludes.

Via TikTok direct message, Yeni told Motor1, "I was so lost. I haven't figured out which pump to use or what E-85 is."

Why Do Some Gas Stations Have Six Fuel Choices?

Gas stations typically have three fuel grades: regular unleaded gas (87 octane), plus (89 octane), and premium (91 octane). However, new fuel types and blends have been appearing at gas stations more and more in recent years.

E-85 (flex fuel), diesel, seasonal gasoline blends, unleaded 88, and top tier gasoline are all different specialty fuels you may see at the pump. Each gasoline type varies slightly by octane. Octane is the rating used for classifying gasoline and refers to the fuel's “knock” resistance. The knock is how the gas ignites internally in the engine without the spark from a spark plug.

E-85 or flex fuel is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. This fuel type is designed to be cleaner and more environmentally friendly. This gasoline should only be used for flex-fuel vehicles only. The clean burn does impact gas mileage as flex-fuel vehicles may have lower fuel economy. Kelley Blue Book reports that there are more than 4,800 gas stations in the US with E-85. The E-85 pumps are yellow and flex-fuel vehicle fuel caps are also yellow.

Unleaded 88 is another type of gasoline you may see at the pump; it’s also called E-15. This fuel type contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline, Yahoo Auto reports. This fuel type is corn based ethanol and is used by flex-fuel vehicles.

Diesel is primarily used for heavy duty trucks and vans. Diesel engines give greater torque and work more efficiently. Diesel vehicles have a compression-ignition engine; gasoline-powered vehicles have a spark-ignited engine.

Gas stations also have the ability to make seasonal blends that are better suited for extreme weather in summer or winter.

With all these options, it can be confusing to know which one to choose. The owner’s manual for your vehicle will tell you which fuel to use. This information is also on the fuel door.

“I’m Mean I Would Have Just Drove To The Next Gas Station”

Viewers in the comment section didn’t hold back. Many poked fun of Yeni.

“Just going to say this um it's color coded,” one wrote

“Or you could just read it. Literally right above the pump,” another added.

A few people empathized with Yeni. They wrote, “I mean I would have just drove to the next gas station.”

“I had a little bit of a brain fart the other day too at the pump you’re not alone give yourself some grace,” a second admitted.

A third said, “I do this too. I just forget honestly. He 99% of the time is pumping it for me so I don't pay attention to what kind.”

One person was just impressed to see the variety available at the Racetrac. They said, “I wish we had E-85 over here.”
