Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin Concept

Perhaps anticipating the shift of customer preference from ever-larger sport trucks, Ford’s Special Vehicle Team took a meme of “smaller-lighter-faster” for the Sport Trac Adrenalin concept. The objective was a comfortable four-passenger pickup cab with full-size doors and a four-foot bed, all in the envelope of a mid-sized sport utility vehicle. The Sport Trac Adrenalin achieves this mightily. Hundreds of pounds lighter than full-size performance trucks, it embodies excellent driving dynamics with well-balanced all-around performance.

The heart of the matter is Ford’s respected 4.6-liter SOHC V8, supercharged to 390 bhp. In 1999, a supercharged V8 earned Ford’s SVT F-150 Lightning the nickname “World’s Fastest Truck.” The Adrenalin uses the DOHC version of the 4.6-liter engine created for the 2004 SVT Mustang Cobra. Four-valve aluminum cylinder heads give optimum air flow; a Roots-type supercharger and air-to-water intercooler dial up 390 bhp and a matching 390 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed automatic first used in the Lincoln Navigator, known for smooth, precise shifts and an impressive towing capacity. The Adrenalin is projected to achieve a 6,000-pound tow rating.

One Achilles heel of performance trucks is traction: converting power to forward motion without wheel-spin. The Adrenalin’s full-time all-wheel drive has a 40/60 front-rear torque split, the rear bias delivering power where it’s needed under full throttle. The front axle torque share, however, helps eliminate wheel-spin on full-throttle launches.

Agile handling is enhanced with a short-and-long-arm front suspension and a trailing blade independent rear setup. SVT-tuned spring rates and shock absorbers deliver firm yet smooth control, while losing none of the nimble handling renowned of SVT vehicles. The truck rides on 21-inch five spoke wheels with hand-cut Goodyear 295/45 radial tires. Cross-drilled Brembo brake rotors are braked by red-painted monobloc calipers. The Sport Trac Adrenalin also features Ford’s Advance Trac with Roll Stability Control.

This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in August of 2010 at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center, Monterey, California.
