A lonely prototype of the upcoming Volvo S 80 is cruising on a remote snowy road near Kiruna in Northern Sweden. It is wearing total black – for disguise. On the other side of the world, though, at the same time another prototype of the S 80 is on the road somewhere in South Africa – this one in shiny silver metallic and full showroom trim – no disguise at all. It got caught on photo by an alert photographer during the shooting of a commercial for the new model’s release at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006. . His photo is now revealing for the first time the styling of the all new car.
The new S 80 is using a stretched version of Ford’s C 1 platform with the choice of front- and four-wheel-drive. Power is expected to come different Diesel- and these fuel engines:
- four cylinder engine / 163 HP
- five-cylinder engine / 209 HP
- six- cylinder engine / 272 HP
- the top of the line model has a V 8 engine delivering 299 HP, and four wheel drive
The new Volvo will also get a new safety system kit called Co-Driver. It includes radar sensors and audible collision warnings linked to the Brake Assist. If a collision is imminent, it will apply extra braking pressure, tighten the seatbelts for optimum restraint and prepare the airbags for deployment.
