Nissan Axes Plans for Toyota GT 86 Fighter
The New York Auto Show had Nissan debuting its latest iteration of the GT-R sports car to the drooling masses. You'd think that means they should keep it up and introduce more sports cars. Instead, they're saying they have no plans to introduce a car to rival the Toyota GT. For shame. According to AutoExpress, the only two sports cars the company is betting on are the GT-R and 370Z. This comes from executives speaking at the New York Auto Show. RELATED: See Photos of the Lightweight Nissan iDX Concept
It's not that Nissan doesn't want to build these cars, or that execs don't think the public would be thrilled with the result, the problem is that building a GT 86 rival would be very expensive. It would require a new, small, lightweight platform—and that won't come cheap. The resulting car would be expensive for consumers, and that's not the right direction for Nissan.
It's sad news that Nissan doesn't plan to build a new small sports car anytime soon, but all is not lost. The GT-R and 370Z are staying in the range indefinitely.
