Steering Wheel Comes Off and Driver Re-Attaches Mid-Race!
So much preparation goes into racing, even at the most grassroots levels. You prep the car, you mentally walk through the track. All of these efforts are to help you be ready to react when something goes wrong. But we’re not sure how anyone is ready for a steering wheel to come off at full speed in a race! This video, which comes to us via our friends at BangShift, shows us just how unpredictable a race can be. One minute you’re taking the inside position on a turn, the next minute, the steering wheel has decided to disassociate itself from the car. It can make for one of those moments when you wished you packed an extra pair of underpants. RELATED: Rolex 24 Coverage- Ford GT Struggles, But Don't Panic Yet
Luckily, the driver kept his cool, and made sure that he didn’t careen into the crash walls at the UK’s Donington Park race circuit. Bare-bones track machines like these Caterham race cars (like the one in the video, and the image below) have removable steering wheels for getting in and out of the cockpit more easily, and is supposed to have a locking mechanism to keep this exact scenario from happening. But as the poster of the video admitted, he got a low-quality one off eBay.

But the driver remained incredibly cool in a moment of complete “oh-crap!” and we’re thankful he made it through the ordeal without incident, so that he could post this video for the world to view.
