Christian Bale Backs Out of Enzo Ferrari Biopic
Actor Christian Bale has changed his mind about playing Enzo Ferrari in an upcoming biopic. It wasn't creative differences, but his fears over his own health that prompted him to back out of the role.
Although well-known for gaining and losing large amounts of weight for roles, Bale thought it would be too much to lose the necessary weight to play Enzo Ferrari by spring when filming starts. Bale previously lost 60 pounds for The Machinist in 2004 and gained 40-50 pounds in 2013 for American Hustle (pictured below).
According to Deadline, director Michael Mann is looking to recast the part quickly so filming isn't delayed and is already speaking to other actors. Bale's exit might still delay filming, but it won't stop the movie. The film is titled simply Enzo Ferrari and is set in 1957. It is based on the 1991 book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races by Brock Yates. Mann has been working on this project for the last 15 years. Robert DeNiro is also working on a Ferrari film, but his will look at Enzo's life from the 1940's through the 1980's.
