'NGK Is the Only Option:' Mechanic Says You Should Stop Using This Brand In Your Honda. Then He Shows Why
“This is probably the fifth Honda I’ve bought in two years with this same issue."
A North Carolina mechanic recommends Honda owners avoid using Bosch spark plugs—unless, of course, you live near him and want to pay him to replace yours constantly.
TikTok user Shade Tree Mechanics (@discopotatoe) is a mechanic who flips cars in the Hickory, North Carolina area. And he has a message for anyone outside of his immediate vicinity.
“If you live within a 100 miles of me, please ignore this,” he says to start the video. “If you live more than 100 miles away from the Hickory, North Carolina area? Please continue to do this.”
What Brand of Spark Plugs Should Honda Owners Avoid?
The mechanic is in his garage working on a Honda CR-V, which he says came with an engine misfire on all four cylinders.
“Stop using these Bosch spark plugs in your Hondas,” he says. “It drove, but it had a misfire on all four cylinders. And all it was was the Bosch spark plugs.”
According to the mechanic, the issue with the spark plugs is lucrative for him as a small business owner. Presumably, Honda owners turn to him each time the Bosch spark plugs need replacing.
“This is probably the fifth Honda I’ve bought in two years with this same issue,” he says. “Stop buying Bosch spark plugs for your Hondas. Unless you live within 100 miles of me, then continue to do it.”
What Brands Do Viewers Prefer?
The mechanic and his TikTok following are largely in sync when it comes to the brand they choose when it comes to spark plugs. “NGK spark plugs only, please,” the mechanic wrote in the comments.
He isn’t alone in this opinion; several other viewers agreed that spark plugs manufactured by Niterra North America are preferable to the spark plugs sold by Bosch Auto Parts, which is owned by a parent company based in Germany.
Mechanics debated this subject in a Reddit thread posted to r/MechanicAdvice six years ago. One commenter said, “Use whatever the manufacturer recommends. They’ll typically include part numbers in the owner’s manual.”
“NGK makes the best spark plugs and electrical components on the planet,” said another person. “In my opinion, one of the worst parts of German cars is always the Bosch components.”
A third person split the difference. “Either one is a good choice, but I think NGK is a better component,” they wrote.
As far as Honda goes, the commenters on a Honda tech forum thread generally recommend NGK spark plugs.
