The Golf is Good, but the Volkswagen Corrado is Dearly Missed
For years now, if you wanted a sporty, compact Volkwsagen, one of the Golf siblings (either in R, GTI, or R32 guise) was your go-to. But that wasn't always the case. Roll back the clock a few years and you'll find the heartstring pulling Corrado sports coupe. A car with Golf DNA, but a look all its own. The Volkswagen exited the U.S. market in 1994, and years later it was succeeded by the new Scirocco abroad, however North American drivers have been left without that cult creating shape ever since. Thankfully, a slew of these Corrados still haunt U.S. shores, like this SLC body-kitted example for sale, and we're all the more lucky for them. When the Corrado first unleashed its wedge styling to the world for 1989, it came wielding a duo of Volkswagen four-pot power plants—a free-breathing 1.8-liter and a supercharged "G60" version. The latter of which delivered 158 horsepower and zero to 60 mph dashes of 7.5 seconds when it arrived to the U.S. in 1990. Perhaps a bit on the low side, but that was merely Act I of a spectacular two-part performance.
In mid-1992, Volkswagen dropped its narrow-angle 2.8-liter VR6 engine into the North American Corrado (Europe got a 2.9), which was met with a new title, "SLC" for "Sport Luxury Coupe." It was impressive to say the least. Now offering up 178 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, the Corrado SLC could sprint to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and notched a top speed of 137 mph. Though it was a front-drive car through and through, the SLC has been known to offer a bit of lift-off oversteer, you know, just to keep you on your toes.

Though short-lived (Volkswagen only built 97,521 from '89 to '95) and many times glossed over next to the prolific GTI, the Corrado does seem to net perennial nominations as a "future classic." And you'll see no dissent here.
This 1993 Volkswagen Corrado SLC isn't your average 'Rado either. It packs the five-speed manual and VR6 engine, plus it comes dressed in a period Zender body kit, complete with front lower valence, side skirts, rear spoiler and 17-inch STR three-piece wheels. Commence the "bring it back, bring it back" chant.
